The DX Goes Italian Tonight

For those fans of Italian design (and of Italy, for that matter) Toronto’s acclaimed Design Exchange on Bay Street launches MilanoMadeInDesign tonight at 6:00.

Here is what Paola Poletto of the DX has to say about tonight’s presentation and reception.

  1. [Imagine an] exhibition designed by Canadians Robert LePage and his theatrical intelligence, together with Bruce Mau’s positive excess, and masterminded by Phylis Lambert of the Canadian Centre of Architecture. Paolo Rosa (Studio Azzurro – new media firm) is like a LePage and Aldo Colonetti (ottagono) is a design master doer like Phylis Lambert – and they are speaking at 6pm tonight.
  2. the exhibition is about a territory that supports creativity and design. It uses as its base the city plan of leonard da vinci, all the way to contemporary houses like ferrari and prada, to tell the story of design – that milan has been at it for 600 years and that’s why they are so good at it.
  1. the exhibition itself is really outstanding – controlled – and functions for me like a study – it addresses the very real dilemma in curatorial and museological research of having to compete with the modern boutique that has in many ways undermined the museum experience. Boutiques (think yabu pushelberg, etc.) are able to place objects more effectively and draw larger audiences. The challenge as represented effectively in this show is for museums to adopt the lessons and techniques of theatre and complete spatial staging for a unique and alternative experience to shopping.
