Sympathetic Addresses - Number 7
imageThe new LOFT living – actually based on the charming concept of artists’ lofts – has also taken over as most of the new development in the L..P.C .Village.
Every so often, I review the real estate pages in the New York Times. There are often stories of people moving out of the ‘city’ to the next affordable area.

  1. Robert Fulford once reflected that artists invent the city the rest of us inhabit. For years now we’ve seen how artists move into an area and are followed by and then displaced by the rest of us as Michelle’s “Sympathetic Addresses” story describes. This process illustrates one of the many financial benefits artists create for our culture that they are not compensated for. In a world that is increasingly commodified, having a thriving arts class provides the city with tremendous social and economic advantages. Over the coming years we will either promote and support the arts to our long-term benefit or we will lose our way and fail to recognize and use of one of this city’s great economic benefits.
