Pop Architecture: Beauty School for Architects - Reprised
From Reading Montreal
image

Classic Modernist architecture and design has been a signifier of hip for a few years now, thanks in part to the affectations/aspirations of Wallpaper magazine and its Lacoste-wearing acolytes in the business lounge at Dubai international departures (“darling, we simply must send the Barcelona Chair to be reupholstered…”). Miesian skyscrapers and Eames furniture have since formed the backdrop of many a fashion shoot and car commercial. But beauty products are something else. There may be much to commend the structural properties of hair gel, but we are a little more perturbed by the “false effect” of Lash Architect mascara.

  1. Is it the pairing of the word “false” with the word “architect” that perturbs? I think it’s very connotative of the way architects operate-often the design is false to begin with-the designs are usually just that, a fantasy. Structural engineers look at the design and tell them whether it will forever remain a fantasy because as such, the design could not be built without risking that it fall to the ground.
Hate to burst the bubble that architecture should be “real”....it usually starts off as a falsehood. If it didn’t, architects wouldn’t be able to keep thinking of themselves-for good or ill-as artists.
