Pedestrian Sundays are important for all Torontonians because

* Toronto experienced 48 smog days in 2005 http://www.toronto.ca/health/smog/smog_new.htm

* In 2002, the city adopted the Pedestrian Charter, endorsed by Jane Jacobs - there has been little action
in the four years since http://www.toronto.ca/pedestrian

* Street level pollution from roadway traffic (1.5 - 2 million vehicles/day through Toronto) has well known
negative effects on human health - see attached report from the city's Medical Officer of Health (May 5th, 2006)

* Results of Air Quality testing conducted in the market by researchers from York University on Pedestrian Sundays
showed a marked improvement in local air quality with the absence of motor vehicles (report available upon request)

* They are an example of community action on local issues - Community,Culture, Ecology

* They provide an alternative vision of the public space we share

Each Pedestrian Sunday has a different theme

* May 28th - OPEN UP! Grand Opening Spring Celebration
* June 25th - FIRE! Summer Solstice SUNday
* July 30th - WATER! Streams of Consciousness
* August 13th - BLACKOUT! Kensington Unplugged
* August 27th - AIR! Kensington Community Air Show
* September 24th - EARTH! Global Harvest Traditions
* October 29th - HALLOWEEN! Honoring Our Ancestors
