New Orleans
If there is one city in the United States that Canadians can identify with it is New Orleans. With its French filigree and Acadian link to the early history of Canada, New Orleans has long been a symbol of something other than what we tend to see as America's commercially driven society. Many of us were first introduced to the iconic otherness of the city through Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda's film, Easy Rider. The film's scenes of New Orleans seduced us all. With that more innocent age as a broad cultural touchstone, to see the city underwater and its citizens suffering and dying in a pathetic slow motion is a modern horror.
