Memory Map: Dundas and Beverley, February 1996

I was traveling east on the Dundas streetcar, staring out the window and leaning against a pole. I was deep in thought, feeling winter-ugliness, and had lost touch with my surroundings. An arm snaked around my waist, and I was pulled towards lips pressing against my own. “Hello, Baby”. It was W. I was startled and it took time to register who he was. He led me to the back of the streetcar and we sat close to each other, our legs pushed together. W was tall and lean, a PhD candidate and local hero. I had vied for his attention for months, but in doing so, had given him too much power. He wore a beautiful scarf that wove together different shades of red. He talked me in circles, always a bit too fast, too much activist and theoretical language. I couldn’t find a way to contribute. My stop came, he kissed me and gave my ass a smack as I stood to leave. I squeezed through the corridor full of too many backpacks and winter coats and descended onto the street.
