Happy New Year

While we're not entirely sure about the sanity of wearing strapless gowns outdoors in Toronto on a cold January 1st morning, we did appreciate that Torontonians flooded down to City Hall for City TV's now traditional New Year's Eve festivities. We, however, joined in from a much warmer undisclosed location.

  1. We joined in at 5 minutes to 12 from another undisclosed location. We had been watching the DVD of Supersize Me, a sort of cautionary tale-cum-resolutionmongering exercise. We sat eating Toblerone milk chocolate bars while indulging in a hypocritical, collective marvel at the filmmaker’s McDonald’s diet—its horrors, its highs, its lows, its sheer fear factor.

But why oh why was a post-midnight band playing U2’s New Year’s Day? If I am not mistaken, it’s a song about a terrible massacre that occurred in Ireland as part of the Troubles. Is this supposed to darkly augur in 2006? Did the boys in the band understand the story behind the lyrics?
