Greening The City
image
Launched on November 17th., http://www.letsgreenthiscity.com wants to change the way the citizens of San Francisco think about their city. What better way than to make the idea of a green city impossible to ignore? To that end, they decided to make green design interventions at iconic city landmarks. And who can resist sitting on a grass couch, certainly not the city’s mayor . . .

The project is co-sponsored by the Pacific Gas and Electric Company and ReadyMade Magazine. http://www.letsgreenthiscity.com is one component of a campaign dedicated to making San Francisco the “greenest” city in the United States.

Given the city of Toronto’s obsession with bad street amenities, maybe trying to make the city “green” would result in exceptional, 21st. century design solutions.

  1. Interesting revival.
“Seats and benches in the form of raised turf-covered banks are first mentioned in 1260 by Albertus Magnus, and he advocates positioning them beside a grassy area.”
”...they are continually quoted in literature and from 1400 onwards are illustrated in art more frequently than any other garden element.” – Sylvia Landsberg, The Medieval Garden, University of Toronto Press.

  2. We have “green” (grass covered) tables in our back yard. The idea of placing grass couches in front of major civid landmarks is, you’ll have to agree, a brilliant stroke. And so photogenic too.
