Flag

So, the City of Toronto has an official flag. Who knew? I don’t recall ever seeing this flag, but then again, I don’t look up enough. According to the City of Toronto web site, the original design was the handiwork of a 21-year old George Brown student who in 1974 won a city-wide competition by unanimous vote.

In 1997 when the City of Toronto amalgamated, another competition was launched but none of the entries could dethrone the original design. To save the day, city staff were asked to puzzle through the problem and after a two year approval process, they decided that they couldn’t do better than the 1974 version.

Thong anyone?

  1. I recall that when this Toronto flag came out, there was chatter about how, upside down, it resembled a pair of legs and a fig leaf…
