Rebuilding the Ends of Empire
image

As part of its Visiting Scholars seminar series, the CCA hosts Sheila Crane next Thursday, March 16th at 6:00 pm. Entitled, Rebuilding the Ends of Empire: Architecture and Decolonization between Algiers and Marseille, Crane's public research seminar will explore the effects of proximity and interrelation on the two French cities of Algiers and Marseille beginning in the 1930s. Drawing upon current research on four architects who worked between these two cities: Le Corbusier, Fernand Pouillon, Georges Candilis, and Roland Simounet, Crane's larger project considers how the cities of Algiers and Marseille were imagined, developed, and transformed in relation to one another during the arguably on-going process of decolonization.

Currently an Assistant Professor in the History of Art and Visual Culture Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz where she teaches courses in architectural history and theory, Crane received a B.A. from Smith College as well as M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Northwestern University. In addition to the research project that forms the subject of her seminar, Crane is also completing a book manuscript entitled Mediterranean Crossroads: Marseille and the Remaking of Modern Architecture.

The next CCA seminar, Architecture and the Scene of Evidence, will be presented by Catherine Ingraham on Thursday the 27th of April, also at 6:00 pm.
