This week the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal opens an exhibition by German expressionist, Anselm Kiefer.

A landmark event in the museum’s history, this exhibition is the first Canadian showing of the work of Anselm Kiefer. Paintings, sculptures, books and works on paper are at the core of Anselm Kiefer’s aesthetic concerns. The whole of his art refers to the fundamental experiences of human existence. It presents the great myths, abounding in metaphors, and offers an expression of melancholy and time. The images we find in it are often moving and evocative of history. The war, for example, while not explicitly described, is conveyed through apocalyptic scenes. The remarkable nature of Kiefer’s work is also explained by his great sensitivity to the prevailing atmosphere in Europe in the late 1940s, at a time when absolutely everything needed rebuilding following the mass destruction of cities and countryside. His works are disturbing in the way they reach into our hidden dimensions, our desires and anxieties.
